More than four decades after breaking onto the scene, Quartknee continues to thrive and be popular for the simple reason that he never went away and has been able to grow and evolve over the years. He has been influenced by all types of dance music and several types of popular music.

The first record I ever bought for myself with my own money was “Fly Robin Fly” by the Silver Convention.

Things that clubbers and ravers now take for granted were either invented or perfected during Quartknee’s pioneering days. Things such as the extended single, the concept of multiple mixes or remixes (which itself dates back to the 1960s Dub scene in Jamaica), the Break, mixing between songs (as opposed to a simple segue) and sampling all came about or were popularized under Quartknee’s tutelage.

Many underground clubs only advertised through word of mouth and ‘telephone trees’ where the promoter would call a select group of people and they would each call a few friends and so on until everyone turned up to party. Sometimes the cops would turn up too, but if they didn’t, the party would go well past dawn.

Roller DiscoMore importantly, Disco is the foundation of all modern dance music and a force that shook up the establishment and tore down many socio-economic barriers. People of all incomes, races and sexual preference were able to enjoy Disco and have fun.
