Q and Jody WatleyMusical Matters

My personal evolution has been so guided and influenced by musical movements over the years that it had to flower into a bloom of beats eventually.

Here's a rough outline of my music making journey as its developed so far. To learn more about my musical influences and history, check out the "Heritage" tab above...

DJing

Back in the early 80's the administration at my High School decided to have student DJs play music on the lunch patio, I was drafted to represent the Freshman class. Within a year, some of the other student DJs and I had formed a pirate radio station. We put a transmitter on a hill (If you've been to Laguna Beach in Southern California, it was the hill with the concrete L on it). We blanketed Laguna Beach with underground sounds all summer. I became a regular on the underground club scene in LA and Orange County and after hounding DJ Beej at a teen dance club called Jag in Lake Forrest, CA I finally got to play the opening set on their slowest night. That first professional gig led to others throughout Southern California but a move to San Francisco in the late 80s curtailed the DJing activities in favour of organizing and promoting dance parties.

Throwing Parties

In 1986, a couple of transplanted New York art school grads moved to LA and enlisted my assistance in promoting their club night called, "The Surprising Taste Of No Wax Formica". OK so I had so much fun at the club that I begged them for a DJ slot and settled for a space on the crew. Crazy costumes and animated antics ensued. After a move to SF the following year and getting lost in various club scene antics, I eventually hooked up with DJ Doc Matin to produce what is widely believed to be SF's first Rave. It was called, "Recess" and incorporated many elements inspired by my "No Wax" days. In 1990 Doc moved to LA and I took up with a small cadre of British ex-pats to produce and promote such seminal events as, Wicked, Full Moon Massive, Toon Town, Carefree Dancing, Sweat, and 8.0. I also worked with every major production crew throughout the early to mid-90's which is widely considered San Francisco's "Golden Age" of dance parties. I've lent a hand with The Gathering, Basics, Sunset, Recycle and even "A Rave Called Sharon".

FOXGLUV

In 1996, I moved to England to make music with Deva D and UrthGurl... Foxgluv is the result. Since we've been back in the states my involvement with the Foxies has tapered off considerably as Deva D and UrthGurl wanted to take the music in a harder, drum n bass style. They have since turned that around and gotten over it. In the process, they've been rebranded as DJ Kin and Lux D Coda. We've remained friends and things have really evolved for us over the years. The album we started finally got released. It's even on iTunes now - all my music parts are gone but I co-wrote some of the lyrics. Check out their Myspace page to see what they're up to now...
